Along the banks of a river in South Asia sits an idyllic little village called Amaragiri — home to 100 residents, fresh country air, and picturesque views of the nearby lake and hills.
In this close-knit community, Amaragiri’s residents go about their routines every day — fishing in the river, preserving their catch and selling it in the market to earn a living.
However, it wasn't always so peaceful in Amaragiri.
For over three decades, these families endured daily exploitation by local businessmen who trapped them with false debt — ensnaring the entire village in a cycle of exploitation and abuse.
After IJM's Delhi-based team provided training on how to search for cases of human trafficking in the region, partners came together to discover the plight of the people of Amaragiri village.
IJM, partners and local government then learned about the case and worked together to free the people of Amaragiri — proving it takes a village to bring freedom to so many at one time.
Since the rescue, the the community is thriving in freedom and forging new paths. Some members of the village hold leadership positions and train the younger generations, setting up a strong lineup of leaders to protect what they’ve built — and ensuring no one is exploited here again.
“We want to be self-sufficient and take care of our family. We want the community to thrive as a whole, and invest in our kids' education, who are the only hope for our community to grow," declared the resilient people of Amaragiri.
Thank you for being a part of the village that helped rescue an entire village. Thousands more people are still trapped in modern slavery around the world.
Together we can help bring them freedom.
Gifts given by 11:59 p.m. on March 31 will double in impact up to a total of $215,000. Any amount above that total will be used to meet IJM's most urgent needs.
