IJM Welcomes Release of the 2023 TIP Report
Human TraffickingJune 15, 2023, WASHINGTON, D.C. – International Justice Mission (IJM) welcomes and affirms the 2023 Trafficking in Persons Report (TIP Report) published by the U.S. Department of State. Released annually, the TIP Report ranks each country based on the strength and effectiveness of its anti-trafficking efforts. The report presents insight into the global state of human trafficking and carries weight for U.S. and multilateral foreign aid allocations.
“This year’s Trafficking in Persons Report provides a comprehensive overview of the state of human trafficking around the world and the tools we are using to strengthen our response and coordination,” said Secretary of State Anthony Blinken. “It also highlights the stories of survivors, emerging tactics—like cyber scam operations—used by traffickers and provides recommendations for how we can better work together to address this crime.”
“The TIP Report shines a needed light on human trafficking’s severe dangers and confirms what we know to be true: Human trafficking is a global threat that requires immediate and focused attention,” said Sharon Payt, IJM Vice President of Corporate and Government Partnerships. “This report gives policymakers, advocates, and the public the ability to see how individual governments are progressing to address particular challenges with trafficking and exploitation around the world.”
“Perennial challenges like poverty, conflict and governmental inaction fuel slavery. This year alone, we have seen the reignition of strife in Sudan, Russia’s continued war in Ukraine, multiple refugee crises and a world still reeling from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Nate King, IJM Director of Congressional Affairs. “The state of our world, as outlined in this report, demands action.”
As the 2023 TIP Report is released, Congress has yet to reauthorize vital international anti-trafficking policy and funding enshrined in the Trafficking Victims Protection Act (TVPA), which lapsed in September 2021. It is past time for the reauthorization of the TVPA to advance through both chambers of Congress and reach the president’s desk. We look forward to working with Congress to pass the TVPRA and fight human trafficking around the world.
