The Need
For over 25 years, IJM has pioneered the work to protect vulnerable people from violence. 9 out of 9 times in the last decade, IJM’s Justice System Strengthening Projects have reduced slavery and violence between 50 and 85% for very large populations of people in poverty. As we grow to expand our impact to protect 500 million people from violence, we are seeking a Senior Manager, Finance who will play a key role in leading the finance operations of the Uganda national office. The Senior Manager, Finance, is charged with the responsibility of ensuring that finances are managed efficiently and within the policies of the organization. The Senior Manager, Finance, will ensure that the office complies with internal, statutory and regulatory finance protocol as well as grant financial requirements. The Senior Manager, Finance will ensure that the office is maintaining the highest standard of finance stewardship and getting value for money and finance internal controls are strictly adhered to. The Senior Manager, Finance will provide leadership and professional oversight and support to the IJM Uganda Field Offices and IJM implementing partners. The Senior Manager, Finance as a member of the Senior Leadership Team, will play a critical role in the support of the development and tracking of operations and programme budgets, forecasts and reports to ensure on successful and timely delivery of the national programme.
This position is based in Kampala and reports to the Country Director and is only available for candidates with the right to work in Uganda.
Responsibilities:
- Lead and oversee the country office compliance with IJM’s Global, regional and local finance policies and accounting requirements, Uganda government regulations and grant agreements.
- Lead the month-close finance processes and reporting on Smartsheet, Finance Packet, Quarterly Balance Sheet Schedules, and Budget vs Actual reports.
- Lead a strong team that embodies IJM’s spiritual rhythms and core values and efficiently and effectively delivers their mandate.
- Support the Country Director and Senior Leadership Team to ensure timely preparation of the annual programme and operations budget that is aligned to country programme strategy and workplans.
- Support development, review and embedding of existing finance tools for budget and grant monitoring.
- Produce financial analysis for Senior Management and Budget Managers to gain insight and timely actionable information for managing country programme resources.
- Proactively engage country leadership to ensure value-for-money is achieved in all areas of country programme and operations expenditure.
- Review and update financial budgets and workplans for all funding sources identify concerns relating to the country office funding position and core costs.
- Analyze and present monthly financial reports in an accurate and timely manner and ensure the country programme office maintains a high score card and meets all internal standards.
- Lead on the timeliness and accuracy of donor reports for all grants when due, ensure reports are generated from the Workday/Adaptive only.
- Update Field Office policies and procedures with the global guidance on accounting and procurement and ensure the Field Office complies with Ugandan government regulations.
- Lead the annual external audit process for the year ending and other audits as appropriate and ensure that the office receives an annual clean audit and IJM maintains its annual status of low-risk auditee.
- Facilitate efficient communication and process navigation between the Uganda country office and Global and Regional Finance teams.
- Ensure strict compliance with regulatory requirements.
- Participate in IJM programs of professionalism and Christian spiritual formation.
- Ensure compliance with IJM core commitments and values
- Adhere to IJM safeguarding code of conduct towards a safe work environment for all.
- Ensure to use staff-care resources and tools provided by the office to take good care of physical, emotional and psychological health.
Qualifications:
- A bachelor’s degree in accounting or equivalent required.
- Certified/Chartered Accountant credentials required.
- A minimum of Ten (10) years’ demonstrable experience in senior leadership position leading finance teams, in accounting, financial planning, financial control, financial management and grant management.
- Demonstratable experience in budget preparation and financial reporting.
- Experience working in the non-profit/non-governmental sector, experience managing multiple grants would be an added advantage.
- Experience leading and managing teams in a multidisciplinary setting to deliver impact and results.
- Possesses a valid driver’s license with no incidents
- Fluent in the English language both written and spoken is mandatory.
- Thorough understanding of GAAP, cash versus accrual accounting and financial statement preparation
- Knowledge of Uganda operating environment, including registration, taxes and laws
- Ability to review a complete transaction process system, able to identify control procedures, resource needs and interdependencies.
- Ability to make effective presentations to senior leadership, managers and staff using effective presentation aids
- Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, OneDrive, and Outlook
- Excellent writing, documentation and reporting skills, including the ability to maintain digital records and generate high quality reports.
- Proficiency in Accounting Packages/software, Workday is highly preferred.
