IJM Kampala: Four Weddings And A Future

Fri, 05/11/2012

MUKONO, UGANDA – Rebecca’s wedding day is one like many woman dream of: beautiful flowers, a packed church and a stunning white dress. This bride is nearly 70, but sits regally in her finery like a woman half her age.

In fact, just two seats down, there is a woman half her age in another white dress. And two more next to her. There are four veils, four bouquets and four grooms smiling by their sides.

Holly's News From Washington - A Recap of Lobby Day!

By Holly Burkhalter  -  Tue, 05/08/2012

April 16, 2012 might be my all-time favorite day this year.  My colleagues Annick and Tim and I met at Dunkin Donuts on Capitol Hill at 7:00 am and picked up several dozen donuts and some boxes of coffee, packed them in Tim’s Jeep and drove to a nearby church where we set up tables and spread out breakfast.  Within an hour, 2 giant buses arrived from across town carrying over 160 IJM volunteer advocates, who had been in D.C.

IJM Guatemala: Three Men Convicted of Rape After 14-Year-Old Stella's Brave Testimony

Fri, 05/04/2012

GUATEMALA CITY – This week, three men were convicted and sentenced to 13 years in prison for raping Stella*, a 14-year-old Guatemalan girl.

Stella was in a convenience store buying medicine for her headache when three men started heckling her. She left the store, but the men followed her. Stella was beginning to panic when they grabbed her and brought her to an abandoned house. There, she was held at gunpoint and raped by each of the men.

One of the men was the father of a little boy who Stella sometimes helped care for. All of the men are known to be part of a gang.

IJM Kenya: Joseph, An Innocent Father, Free At Last

NAIROBI, KENYA – Today, an innocent Kenyan father named Joseph was declared free after languishing in prison for 16 months. His family's nightmare began when Joseph was arrested and charged with a crime he never committed.

When a riot broke out near the small shop he ran in a popular marketplace, Joseph walked outside to investigate the commotion. He was struck by a stray bullet, fired by police in an attempt to control the crowd. The same police who accidently shot him later ordered him arrested, fabricating the charge that Joseph had injured the police and stolen their weapons.

IJM Kenya: Two Innocent Men Set Free After Three Months in Prison

Thu, 05/03/2012

NAIROBI, KENYA – Yesterday, two innocent men were set free from prison. Three months ago, they were arrested upon a vague suspicion that they might commit a crime in the future. Though they were not charged with a specific crime, they were sent to prison.

Without evidence, they languished in prison for three months. Without an advocate, they would likely remain in prison for months to come.

IJM heard about their story and went to the prison to meet the innocent men.
