CEBU, THE PHILIPPINES – 14-year-old Raina* was hiding in the bathroom, begging the school staff to let her stay. Her mother and step-father were there to pick her up, but she didn't want to go.

She said she was afraid to go home because she didn't want to be sold to men for sex – like her older sister.

The school called for help, and soon local anti-trafficking police and government social workers were on their way. IJM Cebu got a call from the police with the heart-breaking case.

KOLKATA, INDIA – In a small, crowded courtroom on a rainy afternoon in Kolkata, a five-year battle for justice ended with a resounding victory. Two brothel managers and the man who trafficked 15-year-old Renuka* from Bangladesh to Kolkata were convicted and sentenced to prison.

"On the darkest nights, this day will be a beacon of hope," says IJM Kolkata Field Office Director Biju Mathew, "In this work fighting sex trafficking, there are huge challenges. We see violence and despair.

IJM Cambodia: Two Traffickers Convicted After Four Years Sends A Strong Message

PHNOM PENH, CAMBODIA – Two Cambodian traffickers have been convicted and sentenced to nearly a decade in prison – a strong sentence according to the IJM staff who worked on the case. "The verdicts that came from this trial were extremely positive and send out a strong message," explains IJM Cambodia Case Monitor Vinira Hok.

But the now-convicted perpetrators weren't in the courtroom to hear the sentence: They have been at-large for the past four years. The manhunt will now intensify, as police search to find them so they can begin serving their prison sentences.

IJM Mumbai, Police Rescue Girls Trafficked For Sex "Against All Odds"

MUMBAI, INDIA – Late last week, IJM helped police and a specialized anti-trafficking unit rescue young women trafficked for sex from a particularly notorious neighborhood, known for its highly protected criminal activity. The successful rescue operation ended months of investigation, indicating that a couple had been trafficking girls from Bangladesh and selling them to men in Mumbai for sex.

IJM Mumbai: Two Traffickers Convicted, Brothel Ordered Closed

MUMBAI, INDIA – This week, two managers of a brothel in Mumbai's red-light district were found guilty for sex trafficking crimes. The conviction secures justice for eight young women who were rescued from the brothel in early 2011, in a rescue operation led by police based on information they received from IJM Mumbai.

The conviction marked the end of an 18-month battle for justice. Two of the trafficking survivors chose to testify against the managers, and IJM helped them as they prepared to share the painful truth about what had happened inside the dark brothel walls.

NAIROBI, KENYA – After a year and a half, Maria has finally been released from prison. Thrown in jail after being accused of a crime she never committed, Maria can at last return home to her three children.

Eighteen months ago, as Maria was shopping for groceries with her friend, they heard a man shouting for help as he was attacked and robbed. When police showed up to the crime scene, the man said he had been robbed by two young men. But the police arrested Maria. She and the middle-aged gentleman she was with were sent to prison for the robbery.

KOLKATA, INDIA – Laughter and the crash of bowling pins tumbling down fills the air. A popular song begins to play, and dozens of girls shout and sing along. It could be an afternoon of fun anywhere in the world, but for the nearly 150 girls gathered in Kolkata, this afternoon is a standout event. The girls, many of them teenagers and some of them young mothers, are sex trafficking survivors.

Every summer, IJM Kolkata hosts a day full of "summer camp" activities for trafficking survivors who live at the different aftercare homes in the city.

CEBU, THE PHILIPPINES – Last week, IJM helped local police rescue half a dozen young women trafficked for sex. Several of the women are young mothers, and a few are still in school while trying to provide for children. All are extremely poor. As they shared their stories with IJM staff, they explained how the pimps who trafficked them were taking advantage of very desperate needs.

"The pimp was taking advantage of vulnerability – a violation of the Philippines' anti-trafficking law," explained IJM Cebu Director of Legal Interventions Mark Anthony del Mundo.

LUSAKA, ZAMBIA – Last week, one judge took a powerful stand for Tasiyana and her siblings. After a year-long trial, the uncle who stole their family’s home and left them penniless was convicted for his crimes. It is the end to a very long battle for justice – a battle that started 16 years ago.

When her father passed away in 1996, Tasiyana’s uncle threw her siblings from their home, taking the property for himself. Relying on their mother’s meager wages for shelter and food, all four children were forced to drop out of school and work to help the family survive.

IJM Bolivia Wins The Battle For Justice For 5-Year-Old Yulisa

LA PAZ, BOLIVIA – 5-year-old Yulisa* woke up from a horrific nightmare. She was in a dark hole. She was in pain. Hours earlier, her uncle had grabbed her from her room and sexually assaulted her. Then he tried to strangle her and threw her in the hole, leaving her for dead. But Yulisa was alive.

A neighbor found Yulisa at the bottom of the hole, a deep well. He brought a ladder and climbed in to rescue her, carrying her home in his arms to her parents. They were franticly searching for their little girl.
