MUMBAI, INDIA – As IJM and police arrived, an auto rickshaw sped away from the lodge that was doubling as a brothel. The girls had been ordered to leave immediately, as the manager feared the rescue team that was on its way.

The rescue team was indeed looking for the girls – who they believed were victims of sex trafficking. The lodge was empty, but the search was far from over. A surveillance team started to follow the auto rickshaw, determined to find the girls.

The Thane City Anti-Human Trafficking Unit tracked the rickshaw into a dirty slum in a suburb of Mumbai.

NAIROBI, KENYA – This week, Dominic was released from prison after languishing there for 8 months. He had been charged with Robbery with Violence and incarcerated, despite the fact that not a single witness ever stepped forward to substantiate the charges against him.

Last year, a robbery occurred at the construction site where Dominic worked. Three weeks later, he was arrested. The fact that he had showed up for work every day since the robbery should have raised a flag that the charges were false, but Dominic was simply sent to prison to wait for a trial.

Fri, 05/18/2012

NAIROBI, KENYA – Today, after spending exactly one year and one day in prison for a crime he had not committed, Joseph was set free.

Last year, Joseph stepped off a matutu – a mini-bus used for public transportation – and stepped into some kind of public brawl. Suddenly, Joseph was hit by a stone. The next thing he knew, the man who threw the rock was accusing Joseph of stealing his phone. Police nearby overheard, and suddenly the mob turned on Joseph. Joseph still had no idea what was going on.

Both Joseph and the man who had thrown the stone were taken to prison.

By Holly Burkhalter  -  Tue, 05/08/2012

April 16, 2012 might be my all-time favorite day this year.  My colleagues Annick and Tim and I met at Dunkin Donuts on Capitol Hill at 7:00 am and picked up several dozen donuts and some boxes of coffee, packed them in Tim’s Jeep and drove to a nearby church where we set up tables and spread out breakfast.  Within an hour, 2 giant buses arrived from across town carrying over 160 IJM volunteer advocates, who had been in D.C.
