IJM Guatemala: Hidden Abuse Revealed and Justice Secured for Both Sisters

Fri, 04/27/2012

GUATEMALA CITY – This week, a man was convicted for sexually abusing his daughter, only 4 years old when the abuse began. It is the second conviction against the father, who has already been convicted and imprisoned for abusing his other daughter.

The sisters now live in a secure children's home, where they take classes and continue to receive counseling. "Sometimes people say that a child has 'lost their innocence' when they have been abused. I don't think that's the case." says IJM Guatemala social worker Claudia Lujan.

CEBU, THE PHILIPPINES – IJM assisted anti-trafficking police with back-to-back operations at two different karaoke bars where girls had been trafficked.

Five young women were rescued from the first karaoke bar. At HerSpace, the safe government shelter set up for trafficking survivors, each one signed statements that will be used as evidence in court against the suspected traffickers. IJM will represent the survivors as the case develops.

One of the underage girls who was rescued in the operation said her uncle started raping her when she was just 9 years old.

After 75 Days in Prison, Two Innocent Men are Set Free in Kenya

Tue, 04/24/2012

NAIROBI, KENYA – On April 18, two innocent men were set free after spending 75 days in prison – though they were never charged with an actual crime.

The chief police inspector told the court he was investigating a series of crimes, but didn’t have sufficient evidence to charge suspects. With the inspector’s unproven suspicions as the only evidence, Shadrack and Joseph were thrown in prison. The only way out was to post bail – about $1,200 – an impossible amount for the impoverished men.

IJM Kenya’s lawyer James Kironji met the men and quickly determined they were innocent.

IJM Chennai: After A Decade Working to Repay a $10 Loan, A Man is Set Free with A Dozen Others

Mon, 04/23/2012

CHENNAI, INDIA – Over the weekend, 13 individuals were rescued from a tree-cutting unit where they were forced to work as slaves.

Ten years ago, one of the men borrowed 500 rupees from the owner, about $10. But this was not a loan; it was a trap meant to snare an impoverished man desperate for work. He had been working for a decade to repay the loan, but he was still in slavery. In fact, the owner claimed the alleged loan had grown to over $750.

Along with the other men and women forced to work alongside him, this man is now free.

Fri, 04/13/2012

NAIROBI, KENYA – Yesterday, after 21 days wrongfully detained in a Kenyan prison, six men were set free.

The men were rounded up and arrested in a police sweep. They were sent to prison. But none of them were accused or charged of any crime. Nevertheless, they were told that they would stay in prison until they could post an exorbitant bond to ensure they “keep the peace.” None of the men could pay.

So they remained incarcerated for three weeks, with no end in sight.

IJM Chennai’s Director of Aftercare, Pranitha Timothy, added that the rice mill owner went to their village and offered them money and a better future. “That false promise lasted only a few days before the abuse began,” she said.

I recently had the wonderful experience of sitting in my IJM office with a roomful of colleagues watching a telecast of an unprecedented cabinet-level meeting on modern day slavery.  The President’s Interagency Task Force on Trafficking met at the White House on March 15 to talk about the Obama Administration’s record on addressing slavery and trafficking at home and abroad and to propose new initiatives for the future.

Chaired by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, the meeting included, among others, the heads of the Department of Health and Human Services, the Departmen
