IJM Manila: A Bar Closed Means "No Child Will Ever Have to be Exploited Here Again"

MANILA, THE PHILIPPINES – Late last week, a karaoke bar where minors had been trafficked and sold for sex was permanently closed. "This closure means that no child will ever have to be exploited here again," explained Lawrence Aritao, one of IJM Manila's lawyers.

Local authorities permanently closed a bar that was known to sell minors for sex.

First, IJM Mumbai received intelligence of a potential trafficking case: A mother was desperate to save her daughter, anxious that she had been trafficked to a town a few hours away.

Arjun's Family is Free, but the Battle for Justice Continues

BANGALORE, INDIA – Some IJM clients are nervous to go to court. Not Arjun. The young boy told IJM he wanted to go to court and tell the judge how the owner of the brick kiln where he once lived had beaten his parents. When his family was rescued from slavery three years ago, Arjun was just 8 – but he remembers clearly what his family faced, and he was ready for his voice to be heard.

IJM Cambodia: Terrified Trafficking Survivor Rescued from Brothel

PHNOM PENH, CAMBODIA – Late last week, IJM worked with police to rescue young women who were trapped in a brothel. IJM investigators discovered and documented evidence of the abuse that was occurring in the brothel, located in a popular tourist destination notorious for trafficking and commercial sexual exploitation of underage girls.

The brothel owner controlled the girls with intense fear tactics. In an apparent attempt to cover her own crimes, she told the girls that the police would arrest them and that they should hide if law enforcement ever came to the brothel.

IJM Kenya Celebrates Significant Victory in Court: Justice for 9-Year-Old Girl

NAIROBI, KENYA – On Friday afternoon, an IJM lawyer in Kenya received a much-anticipated phone call: The man who had been charged with sexually abusing a 9-year-old girl was convicted, after significant advocacy from IJM’s legal team. 

The conviction secures justice for Bethany*, who was sexually assaulted by her landlord two years ago. Since the incident, Bethany has completed Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and is in school.

IJM Rwanda: Perpetrator Sentenced to 15 Years in Prison for Sexually Abusing 2-Year-Old Girl

KIGALI, RWANDA – A Rwandan judge sentenced a local businessman to 15 years in prison for sexually assaulting a two-year-old girl. In addition to facing jail time for criminal charges, the perpetrator must pay fines for civil damages that were levied against him at the same time.

The judgment was delivered in late December 2011, marking IJM Rwanda’s fourth conviction of the year in IJM-supported cases against perpetrators of sexual violence.

News From Washington - A Year in Review

Happy New Year, dear friends! I had a lovely break over Christmas but am glad to be back at my desk.
