Special Counsel for Intervention - Cebu, Philippines

The Need

International Justice Mission (IJM) is seeking an experienced Filipino attorney to serve as Special Counsel for Intervention in Cebu, Philippines. The qualified candidate will assist the Director of Legal Intervention in developing, coordinating and implementing IJM’s legal strategy.

Responsibilities

  • Obtain tangible accountability for perpetrators and/or relief for victims in cases concerning trafficking in persons and commercial sexual exploitation;
  • Act as private prosecutor in cases where it is necessary to assure the zealous prosecution of the accused in assigned cases;
  • Attend and/or participate in all legal proceedings relevant to assigned cases;
  • Perform legal research and draft pleadings as necessary in assigned cases;
  • Conduct paralegal trainings, police trainings, judges’ and prosecutors’ trainings, advocacy campaigns and/or multi-disciplinary trainings on anti-trafficking;
  • Assist in drafting the legal brief bank on issues related to anti-trafficking; and
  • Perform other related duties as required and necessary.

Required Skills and Experience

  • Fluency in oral and written communication in English and Filipino (fluency in oral and written Cebuano highly desirable but not required);
  • Member of the Integrated Bar of the Philippines;
  • Excellent academic credentials;
  • Minimum of one year legal experience, criminal litigation preferred;
  • Strong legal research and writing skills;
  • Demonstrated commitment to serving the poor and the oppressed;
  • Strong leadership skills; and
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
